1. The candy cane is in the shape of a shepherd’s staff. Jesus is our Shepherd, and we are His flock. A sheep follows his own shepherd, knows his voice, trusts him and knows that he is totally safe with him. The sheep will follow no other shepherd than their own. In the same way, if we belong to Jesus, we are to follow only Him. (John 10:11; Psalm 23:1; Isaiah 40:11)

 

2.Turned over, the candy cane is a “J,” the first letter of Jesus’ name. (Luke 1:31) It is made of hard candy to remind us that Christ is the “rock” of our salvation.

 

3.The wide red stripes on the candy cane represent the blood Jesus shed on the cross for

each one of us so that we can have eternal life through Him. He restores us and cleans us with His shed blood—the only thing that can wash away our sin. (Luke 22:20)

 

4.The white stripes on the candy cane represent Jesus’ virgin birth and His pure, sinless life. He is the only human being ever who never committed a single sin, even though He was tempted just as we are. (1 Peter 2:22)

 

5. The narrow red stripes on candy canes symbolize Jesus’ stripes, or scars, which He got when He was arrested and whipped. The Bible says we are healed (of sin) because He took those wounds. (Isaiah 53:5; 1 Peter 2:24)

 

6.The flavoring in the candy cane is peppermint, which is similar to hyssop. Hyssop is of the mint family and was used in Old Testament times for purification and sacrifice. (John 19:29; Psalm 51:7)

 

7. When we break our candy cane, it reminds us that Jesus’ body was broken for us. When we have communion, it is a reminder of what He did for us. (1 Corinthians 11:24)

 

 

8. AND, if we share our candy cane and give some to someone else because we love that person, we are sharing the love of Jesus. (1 John 4:7,8)

 

God gave Himself to us when He sent Jesus to earth to save us. He loves us so much that He wants us to spend eternity with Him. We are assured of that when we accept Jesus into our hearts as our Savior. (John 1:12; John 3:3,16)

Extended Description

Arson leads to a cop killing in the Mojave Desert. On the fence

I've now read all the Alex Hollick FBI series. I can't decide if they're really compelling or really awful. Each time I started a new book, I couldn't figure out why I was reading it. The plots were ok but not particularly gripping, The writing was pedantic and slow, overly descriptive about non-essential things and lacking detail about essential plot details. Most of the sex scenes were horribly written and should have been left to the reader's imagination. They added nothing to the book and detracted from the writing. Admittedly by the third or forth one, I started skipping them because they were so painfully awful.
Now having said that, I like the Alex Hollick character. Downs did a good job portraying him as someone who cares about what he does, who wants to be a "good guy" for his country and is torn when he has to participate in activities he's knows are morally reprehensible.

I was asked by the author to read/review this title and was provided a free Kindle copy.

This book is too painfully awful to read and I didn't finish it. When I say it's over-punctuated, I mean it's REALLY over-punctuated. The misplaced commas make it difficult to follow the story. It's as if the author isn't quite sure how to use commas, so he just inserts them randomly. The dialogue is stilted and comes off like a couple of bad actors - for whom English is a second language - sitting and reading a badly written script. The dialogue of Alex Hollick's phone call to a suicide hotline was so painful, I was almost hoping he'd kill himself and end the torture. Unfortunately, since that was only 3% into the book, I knew it wasn't likely to happen unless the bloodbath ritual was one that raised Hollick from the dead.

The book starts with long and detailed descriptions of each character involved in the first scene. It was a complete character rundown: here's what this guy looks like and where he comes from. There was no effort to weave the character description and background into the story. That's when I first started checking to see if I'd read enough to say I'd given it a good effort.
I didn't make it through even 10% of this mess. I realize this is the author's first book; he needs a really REALLY good editor and a brutally honest beta reader group. This book should never have been published in its present state. Don't waste your money.

Editorial help needed

I forced myself to finish _The Bloodbath Ritual_ even though the story line kept me somewhat interested. What caused me to want to quit reading almost any time I began is the many, many, many punctuation errors, along with some grammatical ones. The author seems to think that commas belong in every sentence and uses them without thought. It is distracting, to say the least. I am a retired high school English teacher who reacts to such errors as we did when teachers' fingernails scraped chalkboards. I am willing to edit manuscripts, for a fee, if authors want to contact me. The overuse of commas detracts from the plot. There are other over-usages present, but I'll leave my comments focused on comma usage.
