The eighth Walt Longmire novel

Sheriff Walt Longmire is on a reservation in Montana scouting a potential location for his daughter's wedding when a woman plummets to her death from a nearby cliff. Rather miraculously, a baby she is holding survives the fall. Unless the woman committed suicide (and nobody believes she would take her baby with her), the woman's no-good drunken husband is the obvious murder suspect, but Walt isn't so sure. Longmire is outside of his jurisdiction, so the crime will be investigated either by the tribal Chief of Police, Lolo Long, or the FBI. That doesn't stop Longmire from playing an active role. Another murder removes its victim from his list of suspects, deepening the mystery of the killer's identity.

Despite (or because of) her beauty, Lolo has a seriously large buffalo chip on her shoulder, a fact that contributes about half of the story's considerable comic relief. Longmire takes it upon himself to give Lolo some (mostly unwelcome) professional advice and on-the-job training. At the same time, everything that can go wrong does as Longmire tries to make arrangements for his daughter's wedding, providing another source of amusement. Laughs aside, Craig Johnson writes scenes of family dynamics that are sweet and touching without ever becoming melodramatic.

As the Crow Flies is a better-than-average mystery written in an easy, breezy style that mixes mild intrigue with gentle humor. Johnson doesn't rely on chase scenes or machismo-laden heroes to carry the story. Longmire doesn't provoke confrontations to prove his toughness, nor does he have the mindless "zero tolerance" attitude toward crime that too often characterizes fictional law enforcement officers. He is, in fact, more likely to tell someone to stop being stupid than he is to arrest them for foolish behavior. His self-deprecating remarks and laid-back attitude make him a likable character. The other series regular who plays a large role in As the Crow Flies, Henry Standing Bear, is equally likable. All the characters have unique personalities; even minor characters are believable.

The story's many plot threads all tie together nicely at the end. I wasn't able to identify the killer although a more astute reader might have better luck. Longmire's experiences as he pursues the investigation are as engaging as the mystery itself. The novel's most interesting section involves a Cheyenne religious ceremony in which Longmire is invited to participate. It is rare in a suspense novel for an upright hero to ingest peyote. Johnson's description of Longmire's hallucinatory experience is both respectful and fascinating. Longmire's vision, of course, helps him solve the crime, and if that's a bit farfetched, it is no less entertaining.

In short, As the Crow Flies provides a thoroughly pleasurable reading experience. It isn't necessary to read the earlier books in the Longmire series to appreciate this one, but reading this one might prompt readers to search out the previous installments. If I could, I would give As the Crow Flies 4 1/2 stars.

Never Disappointing!

Craig Johnson's Longmire series is the "comfort food" of reading. The characters become a part of your life as if they really existed. Their relationships with one another are characterized by a kindness and caring that goes beyond family and friendship. Johnson creates stories for his characters that entertain and provoke and make us long for the wide open country of Wyoming.

Walt at his best!!

I loved the setting, and Walt's interaction with the new reservation police chief. Great character development here! Walt is one of my favorite fictional characters, and Craig Johnson never disappoints!

Newsday reporter Maier (Dr. Spock: An American Life) answers the need quite well with this fascinating account, which emphasizes the family's roots as Catholics and products of the Irish diaspora. Unlike Ed Klein's provocative The Kennedy Curse, this thoughtful study does not dwell on the sensational. Maier goes to the heart of the Kennedys' spiritual and tribal identity in order to define and explain a range of subplots within the family saga. For example, one sees Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy's appeasement of the Nazis and his general insensitivity to the plight of Europe's Jews during the late 1930s in fuller colors than before when one realizes the context in which he operated and the tradition out of which he sprang, rich with ancient, profound and unapologetic anti-Semitism. (JPK also clung to the traditional Irish-Catholic bias against Great Britain.) Maier likewise supplies a masterful account of the culture and habits related to Boston's distinctly Irish-Catholic ward politics, first experienced by young JFK in 1946. And he goes on to explore conservative Catholic anger over JFK's moves to "appease"-in the opinion of the Jesuit magazine America-anti-Catholic bigots during the 1960 election. This is all very fertile ground seeded, to a great extent, with items quite rare in recent Kennedy scholarship: new information mingled with genuine insight. Although many of the stories related here are familiar--Joe Kennedy's attempts to break into Brahmin society, the impact on the family of daughter Kathleen's penchant for Protestant men--Maier deepens the account by also bringing up less discussed incidents, such as Congressman John Kennedy's trip to Ireland (and Jackie's, four years after the assassination) and how both the Catholic faith and JFK's Irish heritage played integral parts at the president's funeral. Nor does the story end with the Camelot days. Jean Kennedy Smith, the eighth child in the family, served as ambassador to Ireland, and Bobby Kennedy's daughter, Courtney, married Paul Hill, wrongly imprisoned by the police for terrorism. This extremely readable biography not only examines one particular immigrant family but also sheds light on the larger story of Irish Americans from the early twentieth century onward. Ilene Cooper

Another Side of This Family

Professor Maier has documented a side of the Kennedys that many readers are quite unfamiliar with: their ongoing commitment to their religious heritage. As Maier writes, Americans are more comfortable with Kennedy's as power operators and libertines. The essential Catholic nature of these men and women, however, either bores us or makes us uncomfortable. Some liberals don't appreciate the Kennedys as Catholics because they dislike Catholicism itself. Many conservatives deny that the Kennedy's are Catholic because, for such critics, morality means sexual prudery. Maier is able to strike the proper balance in portraying Joseph, Sr., John F. Kennedy and Edward as committed, believing albeit flawed Catholics. Robert is correctly drawn as the most conventionally devout of the Kennedy males. This should not be a revelation to readers, but in a sense, it is. And the author makes one more very important and routinely ignored point: It is very significant that Americans have been unwilling to nominate (let alone elect) a Roman Catholic to the Presidency since John F. Kennedy, over 40 years ago. This work ranks as one of the best, most carefully-documented and readable of the hundreds of books published about this family.

Superb

Finally a book that places the Kennedys in the context of their Catholic faith. This is one of the finest biographies of the family and easily ranks alongside Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys". Avoid the horrendous documentary DVD of the same name.

Excellent, Well Written Filled with New Insights on the Kennedys

I've read nearly every Kennedy book published but found this one particularly special. Well researched, it offers valuable insights into the Irish roots of Joe Kennedy and his determination to beat a class system which eschewed Irish immigrants as second class citizens. I read things here I'd never read before and was so fascinated I couldn't put the book down till I'd read the whole thing. I highly recommend to Kennedy-philes, people with Irish roots, and anyone who is looking for a well written, memorable book on what drove Joe Kennedy and subsequently his children.

Python for Science Academics and Engineers, NOT programmers

I bought this book as an experienced programmer and Unix user expecting more of a "Numerical Recepies in Python" emphasis on the efficient implementation of algorithms which happen to be in Python. I should have paid more attention to the description.

This book is really more of a "Grad Student's Guide to Everyday Python Usage". I imagine it would be very valuable to a mathematics Grad student without too much programming or shell experience, looking for an alternative to Matlab. However, there is very little "Computational Science" in this book. Do NOT expect a cookbook of high performance algorithm implementations.

The book is a very verbose 700+ pages, all in an unexciting academic LaTeX format. The author works through idiom after idiom for accomplishing different tasks in fairly stand-alone sub-sections without much of a feeling of conceptual "flow" between them. It sort of feels like reading through the author's personal lab notes that he took everytime he learned a new language feature or trick.

If you are an experienced programmer, you will quickly get impatient with the verbose presentation that emphasizes idioms and examples instead of fundamental concepts and syntax reference tables. But, if you are an experienced programmer, you are not the target audience for this book.

Outstanding introduction to Python and Numpy

I've bought what seems to (my wife) be every Python book out there and I can't tell you how sick I am of spam, spam, spam code! (trivial and obfuscated Python code examples with a common theme focused around one Monty Python skit or another...) Spam code seems to prevail in other Python books.

Here finally is a book with code examples that are very clear, are immediately useful to the serious programmer and filled with real life discourse on relative performance differences between Python and other languages that have a reputation for speed. There are clear examples of 'number crunching', producing images and even video animations, hooks into other scientific packages such as MathLab, etc.

If you are interested in really learning Python, want to come away from an hour or twos worth of coding experience with a module or two that you can use tomorrow and are not interested in code examples extolling Monty Python silliness, then this is the book for you.

While this book is about twice as expensive as many of my other Python books, I wish I had purchased this one first. Even though I've been using Python, seemingly every day, for two years, I kept finding nuggets in this book with what seemed to be every turn of the page. My focus right now is processing extremely large data sets of binary data but I'll soon be looking at image processing and I know I'll be reaching for this book over and over again. Don't hesitate! Just buy the book!

*The* reference for folks who work with Matlab

I'm giving this book five stars because it was basically written for me. I don't mean that literally, of course. I say that because the usual methods of googling for answers and reading the manual do not work when you are trying to push the limits of what a tool is capable of doing. I do numerical computations for a variety of things -- finding patterns in large data sets, automating data collection and analysis, converting raw serial output into convenient CSV, plotting multidimensional datasets etc. Over the years, I have collected a large number of productivity habits with Matlab, which allows me to do ridiculously convoluted things in a short period of time. You just have to read the introduction of any Python manual to understand why I am switching from Matlab to Python. The problem is -- what will replace all these productivity habits? They need to be replaced with "Pythonic" habits, something that can take years of practice.

The beauty about Langtangen's book is that it runs through every one of those techniques. Instead of giving a basic example (what your google search would have provided) or a complete list of, ahem, useless techniques (what the manual would have provided), you get exactly what a seasoned data analyst needs to know to get moving with state-of-the-art commands. The author also discusses optimizations and alternatives in each chapter.

The book is also the best source for explaining *why* NumPy should be used by people working with large datasets. Folks love to create toolkits for Python, but some of these are a list of non-intuitive shortcuts that don't provide a substantial improvement over basic Python. Langtangen goes through the pain of explaining the benefits of the package (chapter 4.1.4), so that you can decide for yourself if NumPy is useful for your application.

I will not comment on the parts of the book that deal with C and FORTRAN integration because I leave that to more able programmers. I also will not comment on the extensive GUI building chapters because I do not build GUIs. I will point out, though, that I have derived full value out of this book simply by reading, and re-reading chapters 2, 3, 4 and 8. Some will argue that there is too much "basic Python" in these chapters for the whole to be considered advanced computational science -- my opinion is that even when the author describes "basic Python", his examples and intuition make it so that even one who has read a couple of reference books cover-to-cover will learn something about using "basic Python" to perform numerical analysis in a more efficient way. In fact, the book is a testament to doing really convoluted things in a really compact and elegant manner!
