Sharing differences and similarities

I like the overall purpose of this book, which is to show that although children are different in many ways, they also share many of the same feelings and desires. Books like this help children to learn that it is ok to celebrate both our similarities and our differences. The only grammatical problem I noticed with the book is that the punctuation isn't consistent throughout. This is a good book to use to help kids understand and respect diversity.

In “Catching Lisette”, Tommy chases explanations for his phantom visitor, never anticipating the beguiling answers to his questions.

The fourth tale in this 22,000-word collection is “Photo Finish.” Rosalie Turner’s about to field the biggest curveball life’s ever thrown at her! Mysterious strangers are showing up in her photographs; are the reasons for this rooted in her past? In the Bad Thing that Rosalie never meant to do 19 years before? Or is there a simpler explanation? Rosalie, along with her daughter Jenna, tries to massage clarity out of an enigma, and ends up exploring not only her past, but also her present life. Events conspire to overtake her speculations, though, and Rosalie ends up understanding all too much.

A fabulous read with well-drawn characters and plots. These are four thrilling stories!

A well-built collection of short stories...

Souvenir by Daniel Kelley is a praiseworthy assemblage of well-written, thought-provoking short stories - all with a kind of supernatural/paranormal type vibe. Although I am not typically drawn to short stories, I believe this collection was definitely worth reading. If I had a to pick a favorite of the 4 stories, I would have to say that Photo Finish was probably the one. If you enjoy The Twilight Zone and have a couple spare minutes, I think you will enjoy this compilation.

interesting and engaging

I enjoyed reading these short stories. At first I was disappointed that they were a collection of short stories, as I like to have a more in depth understanding of characters and stories, but in the end I enjoyed the brevity and thought provoking aspect of these short stories. They were all interesting individually and work well together as a collection of stories. Would recommend.

This is one of those books where at the end of each short story you want to rub your temples, shake your head, and ask the author "What happens next?" Souvenir...and three more not-quite-straightforward tales is the perfect name for this collection. The title story, Souvenir, has the makings for a mystery/suspense film. Little Sister left me with too many questions: Did the sister really exist? Was she an aborted/miscarried child? The shell of Marleen? Chasing Linette was my least favorite of the four short stories, though I don't know why. It actually has a very interesting storyline. Photo Finish was the perfect way to end this collection. It has a haunting, tragic, yet beautiful feel to it.

I think this short story collection will appeal to both teens and adults alike.

St. Nicholas once discovered a restaurant owner who was serving plump young children for supper during a time of great starvation. He brought the children back to life from the soup cauldron, and the cook was eventually stoned to death by the villagers.

After his death, Nicholas's body was claimed to have been taken to Venice, and also to Bari, where it was said to have been enshrined in great Cathedrals in both, performing many miracles.

And now you may be tempted to ask, "What bearing has all this stuff about the pagan festivals upon the question of the identity of our old friend Santa Klaus?

I am coming to that. In every one of these festivals the leading figure was an old man, with a lot of white beard and white hair rimming his face.

In the Bacchanalia the representative god was not the young Bacchus, but the aged, cheery and decidedly disreputable Silenus, the chief of the Satyrs and the god of drunkards.

In the Saturnalia it was Saturn, a dignified and venerable old gentleman—the god of Time.

In the Germanic feasts it was Thor, a person of patriarchal aspect, and a warrior to boot.

Now, although the central figure of the Christian festival was the child-god—the Christ-Kindlein - none the less the influence of long pagan antecedents was too strong within the breast of the newly Christianized world to be readily dismissed. The tradition of hoary age as the true representative of the holiday period, a tradition, it will be seen, in which all pagan nations agreed, still remained smoldering under the ashes of the past. It burst into flame again when the past was too far back to be looked upon with dislike or disquietude by the Church. No longer did there seem to be any danger of a relapse into the religious errors of that past.

At first the more dignified representative was chosen as more in keeping with a solemn season. Saturn was preferred to Silenus, and was almost unconsciously re-baptized as Saint Nicholas, the latter being the greatest saint whose festival was celebrated in December and the one who in other respects was most nearly in accord with the dim traditions of Saturn as the hero of the Saturnalia.

If you look at the pictures printed in this book you will see that in face and figure the Saint Nicholas of the early painters was not unlike the ancient idea of Saturn.

And it was many, many years before Saint Nicholas had ousted the Christ-child from the first place in the Christmas festivities. Indeed, as we shall see, he often accompanied his Master on His Christmas rounds. It may be added that he still does so in certain country places in Europe where the modern spirit has been least felt.

In course of time, as the idea of worldly merriment at the Christmas season prevailed over that of prayer and Thanksgiving, the name Saint Nicholas gradually merged into the affectionate diminutive of Santa Klaus. Under the new name the old saint lost all his austerity. He became ruddier, jollier, more rubicund in aspect, while the Christ-Kindlein faded more and more into the background, until at last the very name of the latter, under the slightly different form of Kris-Krinkle, was transferred to his successor.

Informative Holiday Read!

I saw this book in the Kindle Lending Library and decided to give it a read for fun. I figured it would be a light read with cute folk lore about Santa and Christmas, perfect for the holiday season. While it was a quick read, it was far more informative than I anticipated. I also thought this might be a book written for a younger audience, but the explication of facts, legends and details Walsh lays out carefully is articulated in a much more mature manner.

Beginning with the origins of Saint Nicholas, Walsh traces the development of modern Santa Claus in a variety of countries and cultures. Because of the limited facts regarding "Santa Claus", the unverified tales tangent into a variety of branches to the question of who Santa Claus is. Walsh tackles many, if not all, of the stories that inform us of this holiday figure. Understandably, reading about all of these stories can get daunting at times, especially because Walsh talks about Santa in a variety of cultures and time periods; but if you're interested in history and culture you will probably love it!

Walsh also discusses the Christmas Tree, the three Wise Men, and the 12 days of Christmas. Being a Religion major in college I already knew most of the history and background tales noted, but it was very well articulated and better detailed in this book.

My favorite part of this book was learning about how the legend of St. Nicholas blended with Jesus Christ ("Chris Kindlein" or "Christ child") as the center of Christmas. The term Kris Kringle/Krinkle actually coming from Chris Kindlein even though the image of Kris Kringle/Krinkle is that of St. Nicholas. I find it fascinating to see how ideas have developed and changed over time and this book is definitely a great illustration of that in regards to Christmas.

Bottom Line: This is an informative book about the origins of the man we refer to as "Santa Claus". If you're interested in history and culture, this is a great read! Expect it to be informative and detailed rather than a fluffy Christmas book. 4/5 Stars

Lots of History

I was expecting something a little lighter but this book goes into 100s of years of history which I found a little deep for me. If you love digging for the origins though and history is your thing, than get this book for sure. The author seems to have done his homework well. It is all here for you to dig into. You will definitely finish with "Santa knowledge".

I thought there might be more to this book tham there is. I didn't see it would be a children's book which it mostly is. I learned a little. It didn't take long. I read it for free as a prime member which helped.
