Jack, meet Bea. Your game just changed. Forever.

In this short story somewhere between contemporary fantasy and horror, Jack Radney is a poker player with a history. And a fetish for keeping a rigid schedule.

Until one night he meets Beatrice, who has a highly unusual gift. But her ability doesn't work on Jack. Turns out he's a little bit...odd...himself. And in more than one way.

They leave the game together. Which just might be the worst idea either of them ever had.

Note: this story is included in the author's What Happens in September... collection. He also has three novels available. The Secret, a post-apocalyptic supernatural thriller, was published in September 2015.

This is a short story of about 38 pages and is in the paranormal genre.

I like to read things that are different and unexpected and this short story certainly was. Other than a weekly poker game which so many characters both in fiction and real life participate in, there isn't anything usual about this story. The paranormal aspect has a little bit of a different twist, the characters are truly characters in a very real sense and the twists are enough of a 180 to make the reader think "I didn't see that coming."

With something so short I really don't want to say too much about the plot because it is just too easy to give it away, but I will say it has a bit of everything. Love, romance, murder, victims, victimizers and let's not forget poker.

Good read and good fun.

No child left behind
By von
A little twilight zone like or, perhaps not. The idea of a child born to an ash pile, for mother would have not gone over well at that time in history. Maybe not well now for many. I liked the story, but then I'm a bit odd.
