A Good Mystery!

The clue to a good mystery is solving the crime about 30 seconds after the hero, and Thomas Waite accomplishes this goal in his breakout novel, "Terminal Value." The clues, red herrings, and foreshadowing are all there for the seasoned reader to find and tuck away until the end of the story when, after riding on the shirttails of the protagonist, we stare at the last pages, snap our fingers, and say "Of course! That's absolutely right!" In this debut thriller, Waite calls on his personal experience in the ever-changing world of technology and applies his knowledge to this fast-paced, exciting tale. This is one of those books that we can't put down until it's finished. It goes with us in our Kindle or briefcase or backpack so we can continue reading it wherever we go. And as we come to the end, we realize that Waite has left an opening for more adventures with his hero. Can another story be far behind? I hope so!

accurate and relevant high-tech thriller

Most thriller writers don't understand business well enough to write about it. Tom Waite is an exception. He knows how high-tech M&A works, having created and sold his own high-tech marketing firm. The book moves quickly and keeps you guessing as to what the heck is going on with the acquiring firm. At some point the book shifts from business irregularities to matters of life-and-death. I think of it as "The Firm" in high-tech, or as a competitor/complement to Joseph Finder's books.

Good Readers' Club Candidate

Terminal Value is a fine business thriller written by an author who clearly has a great deal of inside knowledge about how things work in the rarefied worlds of Wall Street, High Tech, IPOs, and Mergers & Acquisitions. This novel should be a readers' club favorite because it offers excellent opportunities to discuss, one, the David-and-Goliath issues that arise when a soulless mega corporation gobbles up a small but vibrant and crackerjack firm; and two, the ethical question of when in business it's okay to allow any end to justify the means.
