The Civil War has ended, Pierre has recovered from his physical wounds, but not from the emotional ones. He is asked as a French-speaking member of Comus, one of the Carnival societies, to help some French visitors enjoy Mardi Gras in New Orleans. One of the prominent women in the group offers him a bargain – that since she is a lady in whom Napoleon III takes a special interest, she will help Pierre win a military position in the French Imperial Guards, and in return he is to become her lover.
Pierre is desperate enough to take up her offer, and abandons his family, and sails off with the Countess to France. He does win a position as a top military aide to Napoleon III, and is able to forestall an assassination attempt on the Emperor and Empress. He also lives with the Countess. Over time he comes to realize what an unforgivable act he has committed in deserting his wife and family, and when the Emperor, sick and in terrible pain, expresses a desire to die with his troops in the Franco-Prussian War, Pierre decides that is the only way he can atone for his abandonment of his family – by his own death. The Emperor is captured, but survives, Pierre is very badly wounded, and nursed by his younger sister, Emilie, who has married the English reporter, Mark Sunderland, and now lives in England. On the verge of death Pierre makes out a will, and writes to Joanna begging her forgiveness. Joanna comes to help nurse Pierre.
